Watch Night 150 Years

The Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863. Slaves watched with expectant hope on December 31, 1862. Now 150 years later we continue to watch.

The tradition of watch night continues tomorrow.

The Watchnight service was begun in 1740 by John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. These covenant renewal services have for years provided a godly alternative to the revelry that often accompanies the entrance of the new year.

While the Watchnight service is not a part of the Lutheran tradition, it is appropriate for me to examine what I am watching for in this new year.

What are you watching for in 2013?

How is your study of God’s Word going to define what you are watching for in 2013?

  1. Thank you for asking this question, Pastor:
I am watching for God to “show me great and mighty things that I have never known before.”
    Jeremiah 33:3
May I ask what you are watching for?
